Trimmer Safety
Trimmers are a common lawn care tool, but they still need to be handled with safety in mind. Kids under the age of 15 are especially vulnerable to injury from lawnmowers. The following are important considerations for safe trimming operation.
Safety For Trimmers
- Never install a blade on a trimmer that was not designed for it. Ensure that if a trimmer can be used as a bladed unit all proper blade specific safety guards are installed.
- Keep your trimmer head clean of debris and dirt.
- Keep the trimmer dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions.
- Never store fuel for your trimmer in the home. Petrol, propane, kerosene, and other flammable liquids should be stored outside of living areas in properly-labeled, non-glass safety containers.
- Before refueling the trimmer, turn it off and let it cool down. Petrol spilled on hot engine parts could ignite.
- Maintain your trimmer’s engine according to its maintenance schedule for peak performance and safety.
Handling Petrol
- Never smoke when filling the petrol tank.
- Never keep petrol in the house or fill a petrol tank indoors.
- Never store the machine or fuel container where there is an open flame, spark, or pilot light such as near a water heater or other appliances.
- Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck bed with a plastic bed liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling.
- Wipe up petrol spills immediately and do not attempt to start the engine but move the machine away from the area of spillage and avoid creating any source of ignition until fuel vapors have dissipated.
- Never over-fill the fuel tank. Replace fuel cap and tighten securely.
- Never remove the fuel cap or add fuel with the engine running. Allow the engine to cool, before refueling.
PERSONAL SAFETY
- Always wear protective eyewear.
- Don’t forget ear protection, as well as boots, long pants, and gloves.
- Remember to watch where you are trimming. Bystanders, children and animals up to 50 feet away can be struck by debris kicked up by the trimmer.
- Stay clear of outdoor wiring to avoid zapping yourself.
